After tying our hands behind our backs, they took us through the vestibulum with its flaming basins as lighting.
We leave the palace in the early morning, me a sword under my throat and Benjamin throws it from a soldier against his neck. There is no way to escape. Caught in the act, guilty of attempted sabotage, we will be executed without even a trial.
We are led through the still deserted streets to the Antonine Fortress. Having seen before young rebels suffer the same fate, I know that we will be stripped naked, tortured and then tied to a wooden crossbeam that we will carry through the city to the place of our terrible punishment: death by crucifixion.
We are brought to a large room in the basement of the fortress.
